The Archatine Synod

The Archatine Synod is the name given to the sprawling organisation that is technically responsible for the management of the Archatius Sector. In theory it is responsible for managing sector trade routes, providing updates on the constant flux of Pandaemonium, updating system maps to reflect changing warp-storms and other dangers, providing a neutral court for planetary grievances to be dealt with and managing the trade of resources between in planets. In practice, however, it is an archaic mess weighed down by its own bureaucracy and not given to reversing judgments lightly.

The Archatine Synod is made up of a series of Circles, each being smaller and more powerful than the last. The outermost circle is a Circle in name only and has never actually congregated; it is comprised of the planetary governors, the most influential of nobles and more than a few Rogue Traders. As the Circles go in they rise in power and shrink in size: regional Praefects, sub-sector Praefects, and at the very heart of the Synod is the Praefectorus Quintus – the five people who hold the very fate of the Sector in their hands. With a word they can cut off all routes to a planet, dooming billions to a slow death; with another they can end a centuries-long war between planets. Their power is theoretically limitless. In practice, however, the Quintus very rarely act, leaving the drones of the Synod to implement the decrees of the lesser Circles. When the Quintus do act, however, you can be guaranteed that it will be felt across the whole of the Sector.
